Abena Frimpong was still a second-year student when a director asked her to take over an edit that had stalled for six months. She finished it in five weeks.
“I didn’t know enough to be intimidated by it,” she says now, laughing. “I just knew the footage, and I knew what wasn’t working.”
Learning on features nobody else wanted
Frimpong’s path into the craft has been almost entirely made of projects other editors passed on — difficult footage, disorganized shoots, directors between projects and short on budget. It is, she argues, the fastest possible education.
Nobody teaches you problem-solving. You only learn it from a problem.
